The K α, K α satellite and K β X-ray emission spectra of sodium in metal, Na 2 O, NaOH, NaF and NaCl have been measured in electron excitation. Energies and intensities of the satellite structures have been obtained and compared with theoretical predictions. The K α 5,6 -group is interpreted in terms of multiplet transitions for the first time. The position of the K β band has been compared with many-body calculations for the metal and with a point ion model for the insulators. The shapes of the K β-lines are discussed in terms of density of states of the bands of corresponding solids.
