In the oil and gas industry, biocides are essential for controlling microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) and maintaining the integrity of industrial systems. However, due to the serious risks that conventional chemical biocides pose to human health and the environment, there has been a growing search for environmentally friendly alternatives. Among these, plant-derived biocides stand out for their low environmental impact and effectiveness in inhibiting microbial adhesion, biofilm formation, and metabolic activity because of their high concentrations of phenolic compounds and other bioactive constituents. This perspective focuses on recent innovations in nanobiocides and provides a comprehensive analysis of the chemistry, mechanisms of action, and practical applications of both conventional and plant-based biocides. These novel biocides hold significant promise for reducing environmental harm while enhancing corrosion resistance.
