The conclusions of Macklon and Macdonald (1967) concerning the uptake of chloride at low temperatures by potato cells have been reinterpreted. It is believed that the lack of agreement between their experimental result and what is expected from conventional electrochemical theory of the passive movement of ions into plant cells is due to the fact that electrodes inserted into potato cells only detect the potential across the plasmalemma.
