Demonstrates a theoretical framework for understanding encounters and representation in cognitive architecture, suggesting new insights into relational dynamics.
This paper asks a narrow but foundational question: what is the minimum substrate-agnostic mathematics required for an arbitrary encounter between situated phenomena to become lawfully representable before pattern recognition, pattern admission, or coordinate revision occurs? The proposed answer is deliberately weaker than a predictive theory of interaction. A universal kernel cannot infer the properties of an outcome from constituent ancestry alone, because ancestry is insensitive to arrangement while properties need not be. Universality is therefore purchased by three renunciations: the kernel predicts nothing, births no admitted relation, and assumes no metaphysically privileged individuation of constituents. Instead it acts as a frame-indexed attribution ledger at the boundary between domain-specific world dynamics and an internal representational fabric. The paper refines the encounter witness into two functions: a coupling witness Cₑ, which certifies that coupling rather than mere co-presence occurred under a domain-supplied criterion, and a situated view witness Vₑ, which declares the conditions under which the event became informationally legible. The candidate kernel 𝓚 maps a witnessed event into a versioned ledger and typed unresolved residue while preserving provenance, constraints, claim scope, temporal standing, declared frame and declared loss. Perspective is therefore representable without collapsing into relativism: distinct witness frames may commute toward an operational common reference while retaining typed residuals and non-commuting loss. Four preregistered toy fixtures test the witness split, commutability under parallax and lossy views, calibration under deceptive witness collusion, and the boundary between repeated witnessed residuals and ROSA-style representational review. The results support the functional separations at fixture scope and expose one structural revision: interaction may be mis-levelled as a peer internal generator; the universal component is more plausibly an encounter boundary through which domain mechanics deposit witnessed evidence. The resulting research programme locates adaptive cognitive organisation not in a single “spark” equation but in a lawful circulation from encounter, to witnessed residue, to recurrence, recognition, admission, revised terrain, and altered future witnessing.
