Premature ventricular contractions were associated with significantly higher Poincaré plot standard deviations (SD1 24.91 vs 5.61) and altered fractal dimension and sample entropy compared to normal sinus rhythm.
Why the study?
Does analysis of ECG signals using Fractal Dimension, Poincaré plot, and Sample Entropy differentiate premature ventricular contractions (PVC) from normal sinus rhythm?
Does analysis of ECG signals using Fractal Dimension, Poincaré plot, and Sample Entropy differentiate premature ventricular contractions (PVC) from normal sinus rhythm?
Absolute Event Rate: 24.91% vs 5.61%
Nonlinear signal processing techniques, including Fractal Dimension, Poincaré plots, and Sample Entropy, can effectively differentiate premature ventricular contractions from normal sinus rhythm in short-term ECG recordings.
Premature ventricular contractions (PVC) are premature heartbeats originating from the ventricles of the heart. These heartbeats occur before the regular heartbeat. The Fractal analysis is most mathematical models produce intractable solutions. Some studies tried to apply the fractal dimension (FD) to calculate of cardiac abnormality. Based on FD change, we can identify different abnormalities present in Electrocardiogram (ECG). Present of the uses of Poincar plot indexes and the sample entropy (SE) analyses of heart rate variability (HRV) from short term ECG recordings as a screening tool for PVC. Poincar plot indexes and the SE measure used for analyzing variability and complexity of HRV. A clear reduction of standard deviation (SD) projections in Poincar plot pattern observed a significant difference of SD between healthy Person and PVC subjects. Finally, a comparison shows for FD, SE and Poincar plot parameters.

Rhaman et al. (2013) studied Premature ventricular contractions (PVC) (n=16). Premature ventricular contractions vs. Normal sinus rhythm was evaluated on Poincaré plot standard deviation (SD1). Premature ventricular contractions were associated with significantly higher Poincaré plot standard deviations (SD1 24.91 vs 5.61) and altered fractal dimension and sample entropy compared to normal sinus rhythm.
