The type strain of Candida parapsilosis has not been considered an imperfect form of Lodderomyces elongisporus on the basis of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) reassociation study reported by MEYER et al. (1) and MEYER and PHAFF (2). In 1979, NAKASE et al. (3) reported that C. parapsilosis form II corresponds to the imperfect form of L. elongisporus based upon the physiological and serological characteristics and 'H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the cell wall mannans of these two species. C. parapsilosis form II was shown to be different from C. parapsilosis form I (type strain) mainly in the lack of assimilation of L-arabinose and requirement of thiamin, in the lack of antigenic factor 24, and in the pattern of the NMR specitrum of the cell wall mannan. YAMAZAKI and KoMAGATA (4) also compared two forms (group 1 and group 2) of C. parapsilosis on the basis of electrophoretic patterns of ten enzymes, and confirmed the results of NAKASE et al. (3). However, they have not yet examined the relationships between C. parapsilosis form II and L. elongisporus strains by DNA-DNA hybridization (DNA homology) analysis.
