This is an updated edition of the highly acclaimed Quality of Life book by Fayers and Machin. The original edition was very well received and was a BMA award winner. This second edition retains that high level of excellence. Fayers and Machin tackle the difficult goal to provide a comprehensive reference for the assessment of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and quality of life (QOL) assessments. The potential audience for this book hence ranges over a wide variety of professions and levels of expertise. As such, this review was compiled by the PROQOL team of the Mayo Clinic, which includes a breadth of experience that likely is representative of such a broad perspective. This perhaps was putting undue pressure and unfairly rigorous scrutiny for any single text to endure, but the Fayers/Machin effort won universal praise among our team. The field of QOL research has continued to mature since the first edition was published in 2000. QOL research has become more widely accepted and practiced by the medical community, tools for QOL research have advanced, and the foundations of QOL research have been solidified. The FDA has also recognized the importance of QOL research and has provided recommendations for its use in clinical trials. This edition does an exemplary job of reflecting this growth in the QOL field.
