This paper explores the relationship between a theory of learning and the theory of contemporary society as late modernity. The first part briefly describes a research project into adult learning and its findings; thereafter there are three parts which relate learning to biography in different ways—initially in a more general manner, and thereafter in relation to the forms of experience from which it emanates, and to the types of learning which occur as a result of those experiences.
