Pregnant mare serum gonadotropin has traditionally been abbreviated as PMSG.However, from physiological considerations and immune responses, several workers have suggested that equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) is a more appropriate designation (1, 2).The structural homology of the /3 subunit of PMSG with /3 subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin which we have observed in our PMSG p sequence study' provides further substantive support for this suggestion.Other abbreviations used are: FSH, follicle-stimulating hormone (follitropin); LH, luteinizing hormone, (lutropin); hCG, human chorionic gonadotropin; prefixes e, h, and o in hormone abbreviations, origin, Le. equine, human, or ovine; suffixes a or /3, the appropriate subunit derived from the hormone indicated; BSA, bovine serum albumin; SDS, sodium dodecyl sulfate.
