Highlights potassium channel mutations in epilepsy; leaves open targeted therapeutic translation.
Summary The potassium channel family represents a large group with diverse functional roles. Not surprisingly, the list of potassium channelopathies contributing to human epilepsy has greatly expanded. The focus of this chapter will be the causative role in epilepsy of mutations in potassium channels and associated regulatory proteins. For an expanded treatment of this topic see Jasper’s Basic Mechanisms of the Epilepsies, Fourth Edition (Noebels JL, Avoli M, Rogawski MA, Olsen RW, Delgado‐Escueta AV, eds) published by Oxford University Press (available on the National Library of Medicine Bookshelf [NCBI] at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books ).
