Polyelectrolyte microcapsules are fabricated by a one-step surface precipitation and by a layer-by-layer technique on decomposable colloids. The ternary solvent water/acetone/sodium bromide is adjusted properly keeping dissolved simultaneously the strong polyelectrolytes sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) and poly(vinyl benzyl trimethylammonium chloride). Microcapsules are characterized by confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning force microscopy. The capsules are dissolvable in the ternary solvent. Other dissolved strong polyelectrolyte couples and template-free preparation pathways are suggested.
