Supramolecular hydrogen bonds between dumbbell-shaped molecules and macrocycles containing OsVI−N coordinate bonds led to spontaneous assembly of rotaxane-like complexes (see picture). As a result of the reversible nature of the OsVI−N bonds, the ratio of the free species to the rotaxane-like complex could be precisely controlled in solution by varying the concentrations of the two components.
