This article describes some of the pitfalls which may be encountered when trying to integrate seismic and well log information through seismic acoustic impedance inversion. The article is illustrated using the well known Stratton 3-D seismic and well log data set, available from the Bureau of Economic Geology in Austin, Texas. The onshore Texas Stratton Field is comprised of stacked gas reservoirs and produces from Frio and Vicksburg reservoirs. The Frio unit is a sediment supply dominated fluvial/deltaic system characterized by rapid deposition and high subsidence rates. The Middle Frio, considered here, is relatively undeformed and flat-lying with a gentle north-to-south elongated subsurface domal closure.
