An approximation for the quadrupole projection of the radiation pressure on an inviscid compressible sphere introduced by P. L. Marston [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 67, 15–26 (1980)] is improved by the calculation of additional terms. The result is applicable to liquid drops in acoustic standing waves in immiscible liquids or in gases. The projection does not generally vanish in the long wavelength limit and the results in this limit are verified with simple arguments based on the pressure distribution for flow around spheres. This limit is also applied to traveling waves and is applicable to the deformation of bubbles, drops, and biological cells.
