A homologue of the FAD2 microsomal Δ12-fatty acid desaturase was isolated from borage (Borago officinalis), a species noted for the synthesis of unusual fatty acids. Expression of the borage FAD2 transcript was correlated with the levels of linoleic acid, and expression of this FAD2 homologue was highest in non-photosynthetic tissues.
