The oceanic production of marine fish is probably several times greater than the global catch. If catch is to be increased—and thus obtain “more food from the sea”—then supply or demand will need to be modified. However, the modification of these economic factors can depend heavily on knowledge gleaned from biological and fisheries research, particularly in the areas of recruitment, multispecies interactions, environment, and technology.
