High recurrence of embolic stroke in untreated NVAF cautions management; hypothesis-generating for anticoagulation timing in modern cohorts.
In an autopsy study of patients with NVAF not on anticoagulation, the recurrence rate of embolic stroke was 25.9%, often occurring earlier than thrombotic strokes and frequently involving the contralateral middle cerebral artery.
