Reactions and reaction mechanisms occurring at sessile drop interfacial regions of sodium disilicate glass on chromium were identified at 1000°C and an ambient atmosphere of 2.7 × 10 −4 Pa with a p(O 2 ) of 1 × 10 −15 and 1 × 10 −5 Pa. Depending on the experimental conditions, the principal reactions were redox reactions of Cr 0 with Na + to form Cr 2 + and Na 0 , Cr 2 + with Na + to form Cr 3 + and Na + , Cr 0 with Si 4 + to form CrSi x , alloy dendrites and Cr 2+ , and Cr 2+ with Si 4+ to form Cr 3+ and SiO(gas). Adherence was developed when the interfacial region was saturated with Cr 3+ , i.e., Cr 2 O 3 .
