Studies on the population dynamics of the ladybeetle Coccinella septempunctata L. (Col., Coccinellidae) on cereal fields in Schleswig‐Holstein from 1976 to 1979 Coccinella septempunctata L. is univoltine in Middle Europe. The population dynamics of this ladybird was studied together with the occurrence of the cercal aphids from 1976 to 1979 in an area of ca. 350 ha of arable land northeastly of Kiel (Schleswig‐Holstein, West Germany). Additional sampling was necessary at the nearest hibernation sites between Kiel and Rendsburg. The great distance between the sites of hibernation and of reproduction (more than 20 km) showed, that in an area of 350 ha only a part of a population could be studied. The studies covered a period of 3 generations only. They had to be stopped because of a wide‐spread use of insecticides in the study area. In the area under study there were grown winter wheat, spring oats, winter barley and winter rape, but only fields of wheat and oats were important as breeding sites for C. septempunctata. Wheat and oats together covered at the average ca. 50 per cent of the arable area. When colonizing the fields in early June the ladybeetles preferred fields of oats rather than those of winter wheat. Apparently the plant spacing was responsable for this preference. Later in June the beetles would move to the wheat fields in case aphids were scarce on oats and more common on wheat. Published data indicate, that a given population of C. septempunctata might theoretically multiply by the rate 1: 150. But in the field a maximum rate of 1: 13 was observed. In the life cycle of C. septempunctata losses of varying extent occurred —during larval development (for these losses the predator/prey ratio was responsible—including competition by Syrphid larvae—and possibly also weather conditions) —during dispersal of the young beetles in late summer and during remigration of the beetles to the breeding sites in spring. Losses observed during hibernation were negligible. Parasites of C. septempunctata were probably not important in the period of this study. The predator/prey ratio during the postdiapause ovariole maturation proved to be responsible for the initial success of reproduction. But the final reproduction rate was dependent on the predator/prey ratio during larval development. So the two factors were to be regarded as the key factors causing changes of the population density of C. septempunctata during the present study. But low temperatures and parasites may act in the same way. The dependence of C. septempunctata on the cereal aphids during the study period probably led to opposite trends of population density in the cereal aphid Rhopalosiphum padi and the ladybeetles. To prevent an outbreak of the cereal aphids in the first year already, C. septempunctata would have to start reducing the aphids earlier than it normally does.
