Highly ordered spherical LiFePO 4 is synthesized by an intermittent microwave heating assisted water-bath reaction and the resulted LiFePO 4 shows high tap-density of 2.0 g cm -3 and volumetric specific capacity of 325 mAh cm -3 when used as cathode material in Li-ion battery. The high performance of the ordered spherical LiFePO 4 is explained in terms of the high conductivity and the improved mass transfer kinetics. Such highly ordered spherical LiFePO 4 with improved volumetric specific capacity will be potentially used in the high-power Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
