Lymphocytes from patients with C. albicans infections and control donors were stimulated in vitro by 3 C. albicans antigens: crude antigen, cell wall antigen and cytoplasmic antigen. An increase of DNA synthesis, as measured by incorporation of C14 labelled thymidine, was demonstrated in lymphocytes from all but one patient and all control donors. The cell wall antigen was most potent in stimulating lymphocytes. Patients and controls were also examined for antibodies and delayed skin hypersensitivity to C. albicans. Particularly in the group of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis there was a dissociation between skin hypersensitivity and lymphocyte reactivity. The implications of these findings are discussed.
