Does discharge training and telephone counseling improve self-care agency and coping and adaptation in patients who underwent CABG surgery?
Discharge training and telephone counseling significantly improve self-care agency and coping and adaptation in patients following coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Supports incorporating discharge training with telephone counseling into post-CABG pathways; extends RCT evidence for self-care interventions in cardiac surgery.
BACKGROUND: In this context, discharge training and telephone counseling given to patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery increase the ability of patients to cope with and adapt to their self-care. METHODS: This study was a randomized controlled, experimental design. Both experimental and control groups consisted of 35 individuals with G*power analysis (n = 70). Patients in the experimental group were given discharge training and telephone counseling for two months. At the end of the process, data collection forms were administered to both groups for the last time. Necessary ethical approvals were taken and consent was taken from the patients. CONCLUSION: Positive results were achieved in the experimental group which received given discharge training and telephone counseling. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05104996.

Kaya et al. (2022) conducted an RCT in Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery (n=70). Discharge training and telephone counseling vs. Standard care (no intervention) was evaluated on Change in Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale (ESCA) score (MD 4.80, p=0.001). Discharge training and telephone counseling significantly increased the Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale score by a mean difference of 4.80 compared to standard care in patients following CABG surgery.
