We applied a general job analytic approach to develop taxonomic descriptors for Air Force enlisted specialties. The research instrument was a 268-item structured job analysis questionnaire, the General Work Inventory (GWI). GWI position ratings were obtained from 2,141 incumbents in 164 enlisted specialties. Seven separate sections of GWI items were factor analyzed based on the position ratings, and the resultant sectional factors were subjected to a higher order factor analysis. The GWI factors are both meaningful and stable and will soon be linked, through job component procedures, to current measures of abilities, interests, and physical requirements. The GWI proce- dure is envisioned as an aid in developing a numerical taxonomic system for describing, comparing, and classifying jobs. Some areas of potential applica- tion are identified.
