Asynchronous Chinese hamster ovary cells were incubated in medium that was acidic (pH 6.70) before, during and/or after X irradiation (13 Gy). A two- to threefold increase in survival (from 7.1 X 10/sup -4/) was observed when the postirradiation medium was acidic. Incubation in acidic medium either before or during irradiation did not enhance survival. This increase in survival must be due to either a decrease in fixation of damage or to an increase in recovery from damage.
