Midstage illness is defined as the period following first relapse and extending until curative treatment is no longer indicated. This paper discusses the characteristics of the midstage period: disease progression, medical and treatment crisis, uncertainty, loss of hope, and questioning. Effects of the child's changed developmental level are explored and nursing interventions to assist parents in decision-making, daily care, and management of feelings are suggested.
