Using explosive charge sources in deep water, sound returns from the ocean bottom in a 1- to 3-kc/sec bandwidth were measured at grazing angles from 30° 90°. Data were obtained from three areas and from these data scattering strengths are calculated. Comparison is made with earlier work by Urick and Saling and the possibility of a log-tan dependency for backscattering from the ocean bottom is proposed.
