Within the past four years, significant scientific progress has been possible as a result of improvements in observations of the interplanetary field. First, the range of radial distances over which observations are available has been greatly extended; measurements have been made as near the Sun as 0.3 AU and as far away as 8.5 AU. Second, the range of solar latitudes that have been studied by direct means has also been increased from 7 1/4 to 16°. Third, there have been many more opportunities to compare observations at two or more spacecraft including cases in which they are at widely separated locations.
