Three separate research groups report in this issue of Science ( pages. 782 , 784 , andp. 787 ) that a cellular protein called nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κ B)blocks the programmed form of cell suicide known as apoptosis in several cell types. This finding has led to the suggestion that blocking NF-κ B in tumor cells might make them more vulnerable to drugs or radiation.
