The paper describes the measurement of fibre friction by withdrawing single fibres from a sliver, and shows how the results can be used to predict the drafting force. An examination of the problem of fibre control shows that the understanding of drafting requires an intimate knowledge of the forces acting at the contact between individual fibres. This information is not provided by the technique described when the fibres possess the characteristic of differential friction.
