Previous research suggcsts women's reported causes of divorce vary depending on their socioccono∼nic status (SES). However, SES has been routinely defincd by husbands' incomc rather than by thc women's personal SES. Furthcr, the importance of spousal career support as a determinant of divorce for women has been examined only for highly educatcd professional womcn. Utilizing a questionnaire designed for this study, 130 divorced wolncn provided retrospective accounts of factors that lead to thcir divorcc. Regardless of women's SES, incompatibility and lack of cmotiotial support were thc most frequently cited determinants of divorce. Women divorccd fewer than 10 years rated lack of carecr support as a more important factor in their divorce than did wolncn who had been divorced for a longer time.
