This is a report of the findings of a study to assess the number and kind of therapeutic abortions done in the US during the 6-year period 1963-1968. The data tabulated were from short-term general hospitals that participated in the Professional Activities Survey (P.A.S.) of the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities Ann Arbor Michigan. Tables for the data show 1) therapeutic abortions by number percent ratio per 1000 deliveries and reason for abortion for each year 2) deliveries and abortions and abortion ratios per 1000 deliveries by region ethnic group and medical school affiliation 3) deliveries and abortions by age of woman 4) live births in all hospitals ratio of therapeutic abortions per 1000 deliveries in P.A.S. hospitals and estimated number of abortions in all US hospitals for 1963-1968. Of 7715 abortions during 1966-1968 64% were performed by dilation and curettage or vacuum aspiration 15% by induction of labor 10% by hysterotomy 8% by hysterectomy and 3% by other means. A discussion of postoperative care is given.
