A theory is presented for surface and bulk spin waves in metamagnetic materials that consist of ferromagnetically ordered layers, with the intralayer ferromagnetic exchange being much stronger than the weak antiferromagnetic coupling between adjacent layers. Results are deduced for the spin-wave dispersion relations in both the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases (depending on the applied magnetic field) at low temperatures. The results are applied to FeBr₂ and FeCl₂, where the different crystal structures lead to different properties for the surface spin waves.
