Pope Francis’ apostolic visit to Indonesia in September 2024 is a milestone in the history of interreligious dialogue, particularly in the context of Fratelli Tutti. This qualitative study explores and analyses its significance through the perspective of the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, a key figure in the Istiqlal Declaration. His appointment as Minister of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in October 2024 further confirms the role and relevance of the Declaration in fostering interfaith co-operation in addressing global issues. The findings show that the Pope’s visit was intended to strengthen the practical application of Fratelli Tutti, resulting in the Istiqlal Declaration as a transformative force and a shared commitment to strengthen interreligious dialogue as a ‘bridge’ to build a tolerant attitude based on love rather than coexistence, inclusiveness, and interfaith cooperation. Thus dehumanisation and ecological degradation can be overcome with an ecotheological approach.
