Recognition of the significant role of caregivers of the dependent elderly is demonstrated in the As People Grow Older: Caring for Family Caregivers Project. Such caregivers have been referred to as “the hidden patients”. Given population trends and institutionalisation policies, this subgroup of our population is likely to steadily increase in numbers. The present study draws attention to issues surrounding family caregiving and the value of an educational and support group programme to counteract the heavy demands often experienced by caregivers. Preliminary results from a research evaluation project suggest positive change in psychological well-being as an outcome of a course designed specifically to cater for the needs of caregivers of the dependent elderly. Further support for this funding is contained in the evaluations of the course by group participants.
