Technical evaluation demonstrates improved vacuum furnace performance during argon extraction, indicating reduced background contamination and safer radioactive sample handling.
A resistor-heated all-metal ultrahigh-vacuum furnace used for argon extraction in 40 Ar- 39 Ar dating is described. Compared to conventional extraction systems, the main improvements of the new furnace are: low amounts of argon released in blank runs, ease of maintenance, and reduced health hazard during experiments with radioactive samples.
