Previous work has been reviewed and similarities have been, drawn between the behaviourof copper, silver and tm sulphide films. A coulometric method for the estimation of sulphide stains on tin and tinplate has been devised and, by calibration with an ion-reduction method, an electrochemical equivalent of 0·1128 μg/mC was calculated. Results have been obtained for both laboratory obtained samples and tinplate cans packed with foodstuffs and constituents of the stain have been identtfied by electron-diffraction techniques. An attempt has been made to interpret the sulphide-reduction curves in relation to the constituents identified.
