Embedded particles make a magnetic difference! Co/Pt nanomultilayers containing particles have smaller coercivity fields than their particle-free counterparts. Moreover, they also exhibit bi-axial magnetic anisotropy and a critical field at which the easy direction turns from parallel to perpendicular. The Figure shows a magnetic phase diagram with graphical representations of anisotropic energy surfaces for each of the four existing phases.
