A new calculation of the phonon spectra of the covalent semiconductors is presented using a dielectric matrix approach. Good agreement has been obtained, without recourse to empirical fitting, between theory and experiment. The 'two-phonon' problem in the Raman spectra of diamond is discussed in the light of the calculations. The pressure dependence of the transverse acoustic mode in silicon has also been studied to test further the dielectric matrix model and agreement is achieved up to the induced phase transition when the model fails.
