Resistance to chloramphenicol, ampicillin and other antibacterial drugs, found in a non-capsulated and apparently non-pathogenc Haemophilus influenzae isolated in Britain, was shown to be transmissible en bloc to Escherichia K12, and at a much lower frequency to a capsulated (type d) strain of H. influenzae. A single 62 Mdal plasmid, present in the donor but not in the recipient strains, was found in the transcipients and was presumably responsible for the multiple resistance. The epidemiological implications of these findings are briefly discussed.
