Studies of the corrosion of pure iron showed green rust, approximately Fe42+Fe23+(OH)12(Cl,OH)2, was a stable corrosion product at high pH and low Eh in the presence of chloride. The structure, constitution, preparation, and characterization of green rust was reviewed. A diagram relevant to the corrosion of iron in cement, constructed for pH 12, showed stability fields of green rust, α, δ FeO(OH), and βFeO(OH,Cl) Overall implications of chloride to the corrosion process were investigated.
