Sleep is an important issue in the workplace as lack of sleep or poor quality sleep can impact on workplace health and safety. For occupational health professionals (OHPs), a valid questionnaire can assist in making decisions on fitness generally across a range of occupations but also crucially in safety-critical roles such as in transport and construction. There are several questionnaires that can be used to measure different aspects of sleep and sleepiness including: The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS): This is a long-established and widely used questionnaire that assesses a person’s likelihood of dozing off in various situations, such as watching TV, sitting and reading, or riding in a car. The scores range from 0 to 24, with higher scores indicating more sleepiness. The Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS): This questionnaire is similar to the ESS but with a focus on the level of sleepiness. The scores range from 1 to 9, with 1 indicating ‘extremely alert’ and 9 indicating ‘very sleepy’.
