Mechanistic review reveals astrocyte-driven protein citrullination suppresses microglial defense against amyloid-β in Alzheimer's disease models, highlighting PAD2 as a viable therapeutic target.
A recent study published in Immunity by Zhang and colleagues suggests that astrocytes weaken microglial defense against amyloid-β protein (Aβ) through a citrullinated extracellular signal. 1 The findings reveal a new form of astrocyte–microglia communication driven by protein citrullination in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), and highlight peptidyl-arginine deiminase 2 (PAD2) as a therapeutic target for breaking this inflammatory circuit.
