A retrospective survey of 41 wives of vasectomized men admitted to psychiatric service found 32 still married 7 divorced and 2 widows of suicides. Of the still-married 11 were satisfied 7 would not recommend vasectomy and 14 would qualify a recommendation. Of those still of child-bearing age (28) 20 would not recommend vasectomy or would do so with qualification. Most of the divorced women thought sex was for the husbands benefit and contraception was the husbands duty compared to 6 of the married. Most were pleased with the certainty of avoiding pregnancy. No open castration fantasies were apparent.
