Because of its starchlike staining with iodine, Virchow (1853) considered the substance a carbohydrate moiety, and originated the term "amyloid." The chemical nature of amyloid has never been clearly elucidated, but the studies of Eppinger (1922) and Hass (1940)21demonstrated the presence of both protein and polysaccharide elements. It is not known whether the substance is produced locally or transported to the site of deposition, nor is it known whether it is an abnormal substance, or a normal...Bibliography1.
