The overall proportion of U.S. couples who are currently using contraception is approaching a maximum. 70% of these couples are using highly effective means (sterilization the pill and IUDs). Whites and blacks differ somewhat in the proportions using the various methods. A stabilization and eventual decline of pill use and a correspondent rise in use of the diaphragm will probably be seen in the yars immediately following those covered by the present study due to futher adverse news about side effects. By the end of the 1970s almost all married couples intending to avoid pregnancy will be using contraception and almost all acceptors will be using the most effective medical methods.
