The kinetics of autoxidation of hydroxylamine in the presence of ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid have been studied in the hydroxide ion range 0·5–3·2 mol dm–3. They confirm that a deprotonated hydroxylamine species is involved in the rate-determining step and allow the calculation of the acid dissociation constant at 25 °C (pKa= 13·71). This constant has also been determined by a spectrophotometric method (pKa= 13·74).
