Standard Lagrangians for wave, Laplace and Tricomi-like equations with variable coefficients

General methods to derive Lagrangians for first- and second-order linear partial differential equations with variable coefficients are developed. The methods are used to obtain standard Lagrangians for different physical problems that are described by wave, Laplace and Tricomi-like equations.
