Child abuse and neglect were rediscovered as social problems in the 1960s, with the description of the battered child syndrome. Mandatory reporting laws instituted in the 1970s began to shed light on the scope of the problem. In the last 10 years, public and professional awareness has focused on child sexual abuse, a difficult and volatile topic. Until recently, the monthlyChild Abuse and Neglect: The International Journalwas the only journal devoted exclusively to this field. Last year, the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) began publishingChild Maltreatment, a major new peer-reviewed resource. Editor Mark Chaffin intends this journal to serve an interdisciplinary audience that includes practitioners and researchers from mental health, child protection, law and law enforcement, and medicine and allied health professions.
