Universal filtered multi-carriers (UFMC), being recognized as one of the primary technologies for fifth-generation (5G) systems, hold significant importance due to their unique characteristics and advantages. Its out-of-band (OOB) transmission capability and low bit error rate (BER) contribute to its appeal. However, similar to other multi-carrier modulation (MCM) techniques, UFMC encounters the challenge of a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), particularly in communication systems that employ high peak power signals. Numerous proposals have been made to address PAPR reduction in UFMC systems, but many of them suffer from two main drawbacks. First, they increase the computational complexity, and second, they elevate the BER, which serves as the primary metric for evaluating signal transmission quality. In this paper, we present a novel scheme that greatly improves the performance of the UFMC system by effectively reducing both PAPR and BER, respectively. Our scheme is founded on non-linear companding techniques (NLCT) and incorporates a suggested Flat-top window (FTW) for shaping the signals intended for transmission. By utilizing the FTW in conjunction with NLCT, we successfully maintain a low BER by mitigating side lobes and spectral leakage. Through our experiments, we have obtained promising results, demonstrating that the proposed combination of NLCT technology and a FTW effectively reduces PAPR while significantly decreasing BER. This is particularly noteworthy when employing long-length filters. Consequently, our scheme enables enhanced energy efficiency and reduced distortion in the transmission process.
