Conditions are given for synthetising a reduced model for a multivariable time-invariant linear system by minimising a functional of the error between the output vector of the reduced model and the original model. It is shown that, when the system has a single output or single input and the eigenvalues of the reduced model are specified, the synthesis simplifies to a linear problem. A simple example is presented.
